Hi, I’m Kyla!
This is a little about me.
With 30 years of experience in animal welfare through boots on the ground rescue and feet to concrete shelter work, my goal is to help you and your pets build a relationship based on understanding, compassion, and strengthened communication skills. As a child of adversity, facing homelessness, foster homes and group homes, animals were my sanctuary, teaching me empathy and resilience. From harboring stray kittens in my grandma’s basement to nursing injured wildlife, and even protecting my pets from my own family members, these early experiences shaped my lifelong commitment to animal care and support.
After pursuing a career in Humane Law Enforcement by earning national certification in Animal Cruelty Investigations in the 2000’s, I shifted my focus from criminalization to support and education, recognizing the systemic challenges facing pet owners. My morals did not align with typical “animal rescue” values of classism and racism. I fostered hundreds of animals, with a focus on medically fragile pets and hospice care. I am responsible for placing nearly 10,000 pets into homes across Southern California while volunteering with rescues and professionally leading the San Diego Humane Society’s Adoption team. With a specialization in exotic pet education and a passion for access to easy to understand care, many of these pets still thrive in their homes.
In addition to my passion for cats and dogs, I specialize in caring for complicated and fragile exotic pets like rabbits, rodents, and reptiles. With ethical, Positive Reinforcement and Fear-Free Certified techniques, offering practical, compassionate coaching to help you overcome communication challenges with your pets. My approach is straightforward, goal-oriented, and designed to get results quickly—most sessions are resolved in way less than 60 minutes!
Whether you're facing specific issues, wanting to adopt a new cool pet you know nothing about, or need a second opinion from a professional, I’ll work with you to address the dynamics of your household and help ensure you and your pets thrive together. I offer follow-up appointments and a sliding scale for those in financial need, including shelter workers and volunteers. Let’s work together to enhance your relationship today!
